What do you know about sedation dentistry?

Due to prior torture at the hands of dentists when I was a child, I am scared to death of going to the dentist. I know that I really need to go and I have seen some commercials for "pain - free" and "worry free" dentists. From what I gather, they put you under conscious sedation not exactly sure what that is either and do all the work while you are basically asleep. Opinions?

i dunno if its sedation, but i used laughing gas before. it doesnt make you laugh or anythin but its just this thingy they put over ur nose. the dentist pulled 4 of my teeth with me using it and i did not feel anything and i just watched tv

There are three types of sedation dentistry I know about, and they basically give a different effect, depending the strength of your fear, your dentist will suggest one or the other. They are: IV Sedation - A tranquilizer administered by IV Oral Sedation - You will be provided something along the lines of Valium to be taken before your appointment. Nitrous Oxide Sedation - In otherwords, Gas. I believe in all cases they still use local, so there's no chance you will feel anything
there are basically two options to sedation total anaesthetic in which an anaethesist will come to the surgery, if they have moh certificate or as more generally found this will be undertaken at a hospital. the second option is more favourable, in my opinion, using nitrous gas laughing gas as this has no potential risk or side affects pain free dentistry may refer to new advanced injections that are painless, however you must realise that pain is an after affect to a greater or lesser degree. Be brave and go to a good dentist maybe invest a little time in research and enjoy good dentistry. One word about sleeping dentistry" it may be less painful during the surgery, however there will be more soreness and swelling afterwards and think how the patient can close and check his bite closure if he is asleep? good luck dr mike teeth4u.org
